Heat Stress Symptoms in Dogs

Heat can kill a dog. Some dogs will not try to take it easy on hot, humid days and run around until they collapse. Dogs left in cars on hot, sunny days, even with the windows cracked open, can quickly die. The Veterinarians' Guide to Your Dog's Symptoms states that dogs with snub noses, like pugs or Pekingese, are especially prone to heat stress.

Excessive Panting

Dogs cannot sweat and so can only pant to stay cool. During heat stress, the panting is frantic, incredibly fast and often accompanied by breathing problems.

Thick Drool

Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Manual adds that a dog in heat stress often drools thick, clear saliva because he is panting too rapidly to swallow.

Mucus Membranes

The dog's gums, tongue and underneath the eye may turn a bright red color. Gently pulling down the dog's eyelid will help reveal the membranes under the eye.

Temperature

In heat stress, the dog's body temperature will rocket up to 110 degrees F. (A dog's normal body temperature is 100 to 102.5 degrees F.)

Warning

Even if the dog revives, she still needs to be taken to the vet immediately. Any heat stress or heat stroke case is one of the most serioues emergencies a dog can face.
