Home Remedy Squirrel Repellent

Squirrels will steal seeds from your bird feeder and dig up your flower bulbs in your garden. They can also find ways into your home to nest in your attic or crawlspace. Once inside, they can cause damage to electrical wires. Home squirrel repellents should help keep them at bay. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ammonia

    • Place rags that have been soaked in ammonia near openings in your attic where a squirrel might be able to enter your home.

    Mothballs

    • Make use of your old worn out socks by filling them with moth balls and placing them near the openings to your attic. Since moth balls are toxic, keep them away from kids and pets

    Cayenne Pepper

    • Sprinkle cayenne pepper in your garden and add some to your bird seed. It won't harm the birds, but should deter the squirrels.

    Spray Repellent

    • Make a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 small bottle of hot sauce. Spray the solution around the areas where you need the repellent. You can spray this directly on your plants.

    Block Entrances

    • After you have chased away any resident squirrels from your attic, block access areas with mesh to prevent them from coming back. Using the ammonia or moth ball treatments will make them not want to return.

    Considerations

    • Any repellent treatments you use will need to be repeated every few days for a period of at least 2 weeks. One application is not sufficient to deter them.
