Salicylic Acid Side Effects

Salicylic acid is used most commonly as a topical cream or compound used to remove unwanted elements from the skin's surface. Common uses include wart or skin defect removal. During the early part of the 21st century, a number of companies began using salicylic acid for treatment of acne. However, a wide variety of side effects have been identified.

  1. Warning

    • If any side effect, no matter how minor, appears, it is important for the person using salicylic acid to refrain from continuing. Seeking contact with professional medical personnel such as a physician is necessary.

    Allergies

    • A number of allergies have been associated with salicylic acid use. This can cause swelling of the throat, lips, face and tongue. Hives are often commonplace. More serious effects can impact the lungs, creating shortness of breath.

    Minor Skin Irritants

    • Salicylic acid has been shown to cause minor skin irritations as side effects. Simple effects such as redness, dryness and peeling are common, and should be observed by a doctor.

    Major Skin Irritants

    • More severe skin irritations such as burning and stinging are possible. This can range from a minor feeling similar to a bee sting to a much more prevalent feeling as dramatic as feeling like the whole body is on fire.

    Ingestion

    • Like any topical cream or ointment, salicylic acid will cause major issues when ingested. It can cause at minimum nausea and diarrhea, but more harmful effects such as extreme vomiting.
