What Is a Gas Grill Regulator?

The pressure in the propane tank is greater than the actual pressure needed for grilling, which is why the gas grill regulator is such an important component of your gas grill. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • The regulator prohibits the excessive pressure from getting through to the grill by controlling the amount of propane entering into the grill's heating elements. It is installed in line between the propane tank and the grill elements. There is a small hole in the regulator housing allowing the regulator to "breathe."

    Adjustments

    • Regulators should never be adjusted. They come preset by the manufacturer and do not need any adjustments.

    Malfunctions

    • A common malfunction is the "breathing" hole getting clogged. Another problem is the O-ring leaks or is damaged. The hose attached to the regulator can dry rot or crack and begin to leak propane.

    Finding the Leaks

    • Place dish soap in a small bowl and add some water. With the propane tank on, apply a liberal amount of the soap mixture to the regulator and hose. The leak will cause bubbles to form. Any part that is leaking must be replaced before using the grill again.

    Danger

    • Propane leaking out of the hose or regulator is dangerous. Fire from the grill can ignite the propane, causing an explosion of the propane cylinder. If in doubt, replace the hose and regulator all at once.
