How Many Clubs Are in a Golf Club Set?
Golf rules dictate that a player can carry no more than 14 golf clubs in her bag. The number of clubs that comes with a set depend on the type purchased by the golfer. However, a typical set will be comprised of at least a dozen different clubs.
-
Woods
-
These are the clubs designed to hit the ball far, either off the tee or from the grassy fairway. Although almost all woods are made of metal alloys now, at one time these clubs had heads made of hardwood with a broad club face. The normal golf club set will have three woods; a driver, a three wood and a five wood.
Long Irons
-
Clubs that have heads made of metal with grooved faces are known as the irons. The long irons in a set of clubs are numbered one through four, with most sets coming with just a three and a four iron that serve as long irons designed to hit the ball as far as 230 yards. With golf clubs, the lower the number on the club the further it will hit the ball.
-
Mid and Short Irons
-
The mid-range irons are built to hit the ball from distances ranging between 180 and 140 yards. These are the five through seven irons. Short irons are used when the player has less than 140 yards to the flag; eight and nine irons are called short irons. A set of clubs will have the five through nine iron for a total of five clubs of this type.
Wedges
-
Wedges are clubs with the head lofted so that the ball rises quickly when the golfer hits it. Pitching wedges are standard fare in a normal set of golf clubs but other wedges can be purchased such as sand wedges and lob wedges.
Putters
-
No set of golf clubs is complete without the putter. These clubs are used to make the ball roll on the green and into the hole. Putters come in more shapes and sizes than any other golf club and are selected by the golfer to fit her needs.
