A History of the Energizer Battery Company

Energizer Holdings, known until 2000 as Eveready, sells not only batteries but many types of consumer products. The company has over $3.4 billion in revenue.

  1. Early History

    • The first incarnation of the Eveready company began in 1896 as a company that sold decorative lamps for potted plants. The company was originally known as the American Electrical Novelty & Manufacturing Company. Its name was changed to The American Ever Ready Company and sold flashlights in 1905.

    The 1950s and '60s: Missed Opportunities

    • During the 1950s, Eveready, under its parent company Union Carbide, invented the longer-lasting alkaline battery. It did not aggressively market the product and thus lost share to Duracell.

    Name Change and Sale

    • In the 1980s, Eveready began to market its batteries as Energizer. In 1986, Union Carbide sold Eveready to Ralston Purina. The company continued to lose market share to Duracell.

    Spinoff

    • In 2000, Ralston spun off Energizer as a public company.

    Today

    • Today Energizer Holdings is based in St. Louis. It sells products under the Energizer Battery, Schick and Playtex Products brand names.
