Psychology of Gambling Addiction

Gambling touches many aspects of the human psyche; for those with an addictive personality, gambling can be seductive because of its potential for instant gratification and riches. If that gratification doesn't come, the redemptive aspects of it may entice them to keep trying.

  1. History

    • According to US News and World report, in 1980, the American Psychiatric Association officially categorized pathological gambling as a diagnosable medical disorder.

    Features of Gambling Addiction

    • Most gamblers have the belief that if they just bet again, or place a higher wager, that all their problems will disappear. They believe that they can "win" back their family by paying off their debts.

    The Effects on the Family

    • The gambling addict may be spending mortgage, grocery and utility money on his gambling habit. Many gamblers lose their family based on poor decisions trying to win money back that they have lost.

    Considerations

    • Addicted gamblers can only think of their next big payoff, and have little time to contemplate any other ideas.

    Solutions/Help Options

    • There are organizations that reach out and help those who are addicted, such as Gamblers Anonymous; there are also other organizations within the faith-based community, such as Celebrate Recovery.
