The Signs of Heartworm in Dogs
Heartworm, a mosquito-borne illness, is one of the most serious medical conditions in dogs, and because of how the disease progresses, many dogs show no outward signs of having heartworm until it is quite advanced. Because of the testing involved, only a veterinarian can diagnose heartworm. The condition can be prevented by giving your dog a pill each month. Left untreated, heartworm is always fatal.

Coughing
-
One of the earliest signs a dog has heartworm will likely be a cough. It can be easy to dismiss this as a sign of another, more mild condition.
Fatigue
-
Over time, dogs with heartworm will seem more tired and lethargic than usual.
-
Breathing Trouble
-
As heartworm progresses, it begins to affect the lungs, and you may notice your dog has difficulty breathing.
Jaundice
-
Heartworm often affects the liver after it has progressed for some time, and this can cause jaundice.
Weight Loss
-
In dogs with an advanced case of heartworm, the owners may begin to notice the dog losing weight. As the condition becomes more serious, the dog may appear emaciated.
