Tick Borne Diseases in Dogs
Ticks attach themselves to your dog and feed on his blood. As a result, they transmit diseases directly into his system. Tick-borne diseases share many common symptoms. If your dog is exhibiting symptoms that could be attributed to a tick-borne disease, see your veterinarian as soon as possible for treatment. Some of these diseases can be fatal.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease comes from the deer tick. Symptoms of Lyme disease include stiffness, lameness, swollen joints, loss of appetite, fever and fatigue. Your dog may not show signs of the disease until several months after he was infected.
Canine Ehrlichiosis

Canine ehrlichiosis is caused by the brown dog tick. Symptoms can include fever, loss of appetite, depression, weight loss, runny eyes and nose, nose bleeds and swollen limbs. These may not appear until several months have passed since the disease was transmitted to your dog.

Canine Anaplasmosis

Canine anaplasmosis is also called dog fever or dog tick fever. It comes from the deer tick. Symptoms are similar to other tick diseases including fever, loss of appetite, stiff joints and lethargy, but also can include vomiting, diarrhea, and in extreme cases your dog may have seizures.
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain spotted fever comes from the American dog tick, the wood tick and the lone star tick. Symptoms include fever, stiffness, neurological problems and skin lesions. Typically the illness will last about two weeks, except in serious cases where it could result in the death of your dog.
Babesiosis

Babesiosis is transmitted by three types of ticks--the lxodid, American dog tick and the brown dog tick. The disease causes anemia and your dog may exhibit symptoms of pale gums, weakness and vomiting.
Canine Bartonellosis

Canine bartonellosis comes from the brown dog tick. Symptoms are lameness and fever that come and go. Left untreated, it can result in heart or liver disease.
Hepatozoonosis

Hepatozoonosis is transmitted by the brown dog tick and Gulf Coast ticks. Your dog can be infected if he eats one of the disease-carrying ticks. Symptoms are fever, runny eyes and nose, muscle pain and diarrhea with the presence of blood.
