Job Description for an Accounting Clerk

An accounting clerk performs a variety of duties from backroom calculations to front desk customer service. A clerk often is responsible for posting the day's receipts, filing and tallying deposits. He must also be detail oriented and good with numbers. Additionally, working with adding machines, calculators, databases and bank accounts is a regular part of the job.

  1. Payables

    • An accounts payable clerk receives invoices and matches them with work orders and other verification processes, readying the bills for payment.

    Receivables

    • An accounts receivable clerk typically opens mail and posts payments to the correct accounts, prepares a bank deposit and arranges for pick up or delivery to the bank.

    Bookkeeping

    • A bookkeeper maintains the company books by reconciling expense accounts, preparing reports for management, often handling payroll and keeping the general ledger balanced.

    Banking

    • An accounting clerk who works in a bank typically audits accounts to make sure that payments are timely, computes interest charges and codes documents for loan officers.

    • An auditing clerk checks other people's work to make sure that their final figures are correct. He notes errors and finds the cause of the miscalculation.

    Computers

    • An accounting clerk utilizes computer systems to run databases, pay bills and order supplies.

    Customers

    • An accounting clerk often sees customers to accept payments or provide refunds. On occasion, an accounting clerk must contact individuals with delinquent accounts.
