What to Feed a Sick & Vomiting Dog

Your dog will vomit when her stomach is irritated. Foreign matter, grass, bones or paper all cause nausea in a dog. If she only vomits once or twice and no fever is present, you can probably treat her at home. If her vomiting persists, you should consult your veterinarian.

  1. Nothing for 12 to 24 Hours

    • To give your dog's stomach time to rest, you should not feed him for 12 to 24 hours after vomiting.

    Water

    • To prevent dehydration, you should continue to offer your dog water, but in limited amounts. If she drinks too much at one time, she may begin to vomit again.

    Medication

    • You can give your dog Kaopectate to help settle his stomach after vomiting. He should have 1 tsp. for each 10 lbs. of his weight. You can repeat this every 4 hours if necessary.

    Bland Diet

    • After 12 hours, you can offer your dog a small quantity of bland food, such as boiled chicken breast mixed with cooked rice or pasta. You can also substitute mashed potatoes mixed with a small amount of low-fat cottage cheese for the rice or pasta. If she does not vomit this small amount of food, you can offer another small meal every 4 hours. After a 24-hour period, she should be able to resume normal eating.

    Warning

    • If your dog is forcefully vomiting or if the vomit contains blood, seek immediate assistance from your veterinarian. Other conditions along with vomiting that warrant immediate medical attention are abdominal pain, weakness and fever.
