- William Shakespeare mentions billiards in his play, "Antony and Cleopatra," which he wrote in 1606.
- Rubber strips were added to the railing, or bumpers, of the pool table in the 1600s to protect the railing from chipping and to give the balls added bounce.
- John Thurston of England introduced the first slate-topped pool table in 1826.
