Nobody really know exactly when or where the game of game of billiards started. It is probable that modern-day variations of billiards all evolved from lawn games similar to croquet that were eventually brought indoors and played on the floor. But all that bending and stooping takes a toll on the back, and the games were moved to a tabletop. Thus was born the pool table.

  1. King Louis XI of France is the first recorded owner of a pool table dating back to 1470.

  3. William Shakespeare mentions billiards in his play, "Antony and Cleopatra," which he wrote in 1606.

  5. Rubber strips were added to the railing, or bumpers, of the pool table in the 1600s to protect the railing from chipping and to give the balls added bounce.

  7. John Thurston of England introduced the first slate-topped pool table in 1826.
  8. Significance

  9. In the late 19th century, pool tables were originally installed in "pool rooms," or gambling parlors, to help the patrons pass the time between horse races.
