Types of Swimming Pools

Swimming is one of the best exercises anyone can do. Even if you aren't swimming laps, doing aerobics or other exercises, the water lessens the stress on your joints. However, swimming requires water, and for most people that means a pool. Pools come in a variety of styles for a number of uses, from competition to just relaxing.

  1. Athletic Pools

    • Most athletic centers have a pool

Athletic pools are usually 25 to 50 yards in length, and deep enough to dive into. They are divided into lanes by the use of floating lane markers, and are used both for exercise and competition.

    In-ground Pools

    • In-ground pools should be surrounded by a fence

In-ground pools are put into the ground and are usually surrounded by a concrete patio. These vary in depth, though most have a deep end and a shallow end. For safety's sake, they should have a fence or other barrier around them.

    Above-Ground Pools

    • Above ground pools should never be dived into

Above-ground pools do not require a large hole, and can come with or without a surrounding deck. Walls hold in the water, and a ladder or steps provide access to the pool, which is of a uniform and generally shallow depth.

    Lap Pools

    • Lap pools may be found in spas

Sometimes people want to swim for exercise but don't have space for an athletic pool. Just big enough for one person, with a mechanism to create an artificial current, modern lap pools are the equivalent of an aquatic treadmill.

    Kiddie Pools

    • Some kiddie pools are inflatable

Possibly the most common and popular pools are short kiddie pools. These range from ankle-deep to 3 feet in depth, and are inexpensive, small and often portable.
