About Social Security Benefits for Korean War Veterans

Korean War veterans (and all persons who served in the military prior to 1957) did not have Social Security taxes taken out of their pay during the time they served. Nonetheless, the IRS has given those veterans credit so that they may collect Social Security benefits for their time of service.

  1. Amount of Credit

    • The credit is equal to $160 per month for time served between September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1956.

    Qualifications

    • You will receive the $160 per month tax credit if you were honorably discharged after 90 days of service, discharged because of injury sustained during active duty, or are the survivor of a Korean War veteran who died during active duty.

    How to Get the Credit

    • The Social Security tax credit will be automatically included on your Social Security Earnings Record if you qualify.

    How to Apply

    • Korean War veterans may apply for Social Security benefits online, over the phone or in person at a local Social Security office (see Resources).

    Exceptions

    • If you are already receiving government benefits that cover your service during the Korean War, you will not qualify for this credit.
