Side Effects of Celexa Anti-Depressant
Celexa is the brand name for citalopram, an antidepressant that's widely used to treat psychological disorders in adult, including depression, anxiety and a number of eating disorders. Celexa falls into the category of SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Celexa helps to restore the balance of the neurotransmitters in the brain to enhance mood. It may take up to several weeks until Celexa reaches its maximum potential, and although the medication has few adverse reactions, a number of side effects can occur.

Celexa is not recommended for individuals under the age of 18 (unless taken under a doctor's supervision) because of the potential risk of depression and thoughts of self-harm.
Common Side Effects

Common side effects include vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhea, decreased appetite, faintness, headaches, insomnia, and pain or stiffness in the muscles and joints.

Most of the above side effects significantly decrease or end completely after becoming accustomed to the medication; however, if symptoms of the above persist or increase, and if users experience things such as tremors, changes in libido and weight, or atypical or severe changes in thoughts and mood, they should immediately contact their doctor
Severe Side Effects

Although unlikely, serious side effects such as increased heart beat, seizures, disturbances in vision, changes in menstruation cycle, vomiting, uncharacteristic confusion, and excessive bleeding or bruising can occur.
Adverse Reactions

Indications of an allergic reaction to Celexa include skin irritations (outbreaks of a rash, itching, swelling and discoloration), acute dizziness and trouble with breathing.
Psychological Side Effects

Serious psychiatric side effects include increased symptoms of depression, mood, anxiety, panic attacks, agitation, jitteriness, amnesia, hallucinations, impulsiveness, insomnia, restlessness, speech disruption and thoughts of suicide.
