What is a Lug on a Drum Set?
Playing drums wouldn't be possible without the drum lug. A good player has to understand the function of this drum part before they can play and sound their best, let alone repair and maintain the instrument.
-
Lug Defined
-
A lug on a drum or drum set is a metal rod that holds the counterhoop of the drum onto the drum shell, thereby holding the drum head in position.
Use
-
Drum lugs are used both to hold the counterhoop and head of a drum in place and to tune the drum head.
-
Number and Spacing
-
The number of lugs (usually 6 to 10) varies by the size and model of the drum. But they are always placed evenly around the drum head.
Tuning Effect
-
The tighter the drum lug, the higher the pitch of the drum.
Overtightening Damage
-
Tightening drum lugs too much can stretch a drum head out of shape and result in damage or breaking of the head.
More Information
-
Since drum lugs play such a significant roll in a drummer's ability to play well and to sound good on their instrument, serious drummers should learn how to manipulate drum lugs as a matter of standard. (See Resources)
