What Muscles Do Exercise Bikes Work?

The exercise bike is one of the most popular pieces of cardio equipment in gyms and homes. Not only do they aid in weight loss, but they also work a lot of muscles as well.

  1. Quadriceps

    • The quadriceps are the biggest muscles on the legs. They are located on top of the thighs and they are being used when the leg is extending.

    Glutes

    • The glutes are the muscles of the butt. They are also being used when the leg is being extended.

    Hamstrings

    • The hamstrings are located on the back of the leg, opposite of the quadriceps. They are being worked when the knee is being bent or flexed.

    Calves

    • The calves are on the back part of the bottom leg below the knee. They are called into action when the foot is plantar flexing, which means pointing down.

    Anterior Tibialis

    • The anterior tibialis muscles run down the front of the shin. They are being worked when the foot is dorsiflexing or pointing up. The foot goes back and forth from plantar and dorsi flexion with these motions when it is going around with the pedals.

    Hip Flexors

    • The hip flexors are muscles that are at the bottom of the stomach. As their name says, they are used when the hip is flexing. This happens every time the knee comes toward and away from the body during pedaling.
