The Ford Mustang was the first 2-door mid-size automobile marketed directly to teenagers and young adults. It has a sporty design and racing style options offered in a coupe, convertible and the 2+2 fastback. Following an aggressive marketing campaign in 1964, Ford sold 1 million Mustangs in its first year. It's Ford Motor Company's most successful car since the Model A.

  1. History

    • The 1966 Ford Mustang coupe.

      Ford chief Lee Iacocca sought a sporty car to be placed on the Falcon platform. Stylist John Najjar came up with the Mustang I prototype designed after the P-51 Mustang fighter plan; although Iacocca claimed the car was named for the horse. The Mustang was debuted on April 17, 1964.

    Significance

    • The convertible remains a popular Mustang model.

      The vehicle ushered in the pony car and later the muscle car era of the 1960s and early 1970s, and standardized sports car appointments in mid-size coupes and sedans.

    Function

    • The 1968 Mustang fastback with graphics and fog lamp options.

      The Mustang's primary goal is to make driving fun while performing economically.

    Types

    • The original 1965 Shelby GT 350.

      Race driver Carroll Shelby introduced the Mustang Shelby GT 350, and the Hertz Corporation, the rental car company, produced 1,000 high-performance black and gold Shelby Mustangs.

    Features

    • A modified design by the Italian stylist Giugiaro.

      The fourth generation Mustang (1994 to 2004) offered a basic 3.8-liter V-6 engine with a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic, with the optional small block 302-cubic-inch V-8 retired in 1996.

    Identification

    • The Mustang's scalloped side body panels and galloping horse badges make the vehicle instantly recognizable.

    • The Nicolas Cage 2000 movie "Gone in 60 Seconds" featured Eleanor, a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT 500.
