Types of Winter Grass

Winter grass is often planted alongside summer grasses to keep lawns looking greener year round. Different types of winter grass are best suited to different areas of the country and different uses. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Winter Rye Grass

    • Winter rye grass (lolium perenne) is a perennial that is often mixed in with Kentucky bluegrass and fescue because of its winter hardiness. It is a good choice for Northern lawns because it withstands the cold very well.

    Annual Winter Rye Grass

    • Annual winter rye grass (lolium multiflorum) is often mixed in with perennial winter rye grass in the South. It is ideal for winter overseeding to keep lawns looking green during the cooler months.

    Bluegrass

    • Bluegrass is a perennial cool-season grass with fine, narrow blades, bright color and lush growth. It is often mixed with perennial rye grass for northern lawns.

    Fine Fescue

    • Fine fescue has narrow, bright green blades. It survives extreme cold and is very shade tolerant. It does not do well with wear and tear so is usually mixed with bluegrass and perennial winter rye grass for durability.

    Tall Fescue

    • Tall fescue is similar to fine fescue but much hardier. It's a popular choice for playgrounds and other areas that get a lot of foot traffic.

    Considerations

    • Most winter grass is sold in mixes of various types of winter grass. In the northern areas, a winter grass mix is a necessity for your lawn to survive the cold weather. In southern areas, winter grass will keep the lawn looking bright and green year round.
