Early Signs of Pregnancy Before Missed Period

A woman is usually pregnant for a few weeks before a pregnancy test confirms the diagnosis. A pregnancy test is generally taken around the time that the menstrual period is expected. However, many women experience early pregnancy symptoms even before being far enough along to take a pregnancy test.

  1. Queasy Feeling

    • Often, within a week or so after implantation, a pregnant woman will feel queasy or experience food aversions due to hormonal changes taking place in the body.

    Heartburn

    • Hormonal changes may also cause an increased incidence of heartburn early in pregnancy and beyond.

    Fatigue

    • Newly pregnant mothers often feel exhausted and may require daytime naps.

    Frequent Urination

    • Hormonal changes also increase urination.

    Breast Tenderness

    • In the early weeks of pregnancy, a woman may experience breast swelling and pain.

    Spotting

    • Intermittent spotting may occur about a week after ovulation when implantation of the egg is taking place.

    Elevated Temperature

    • A woman's body temperature fluctuates during the month. Generally, body temperature spikes at ovulation and then goes down when the menstrual period begins. However, if a woman is pregnant, the temperature will continue to stay high.
