History of Latch Hook Rugs

Latch hooking is a fairly recent method of rug making. Traditional rugs are either hooked or punched, but latch hook uses small scraps of yarn and the distinctive hook that gives the craft its name. Latch hook may be used to complete other craft projects as well; wall hangings and pillows are popular.

  1. Name

    • Latch Hook

Latch-hooking derives its name from the tool used to hook the rug. A latch hook is a hinged hook which is pushed through the backing fabric and "latches" around the yarn to be drawn up.

    Time Frame

    • Latch hooking dates back to the second half of the 1800s. Latch hook kits were not created until the twentieth century.

    Types

    • Modern latch hook kits include a pre-colored backing which forms both the base of the rug and the patten for its design. Kits include pre-cut yarn in a precise length (often 2 1/2 inches) to achieve a particular pile height.

    Warning

    • You must finish the edges of a latch hooked piece so it doesn't fray. A binding should also be applied to the underside of the piece.

    Fun Fact

    • Latch hooking was an incredibly popular fad in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s.
