History of Playing Cards

Playing cards are enjoyed all over the world, whether you are a poker fanatic and bridge aficionado. In the UK and the U.S., a standard playing deck is used in multiple games, such as Gin Rummy or Cribbage. Here is a quick look at the history of playing cards.

  1. Origin

    • Around the 10th century, playing cards were originated in China; it was not until 1370 AD that the Europeans developed the deck of cards with four suits and court cards.

    The Design

    • The French developed the classic card design with which we are familiar, with the four suits of hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. They used simple two-tone cards that were easily mass-produced; these decks exploded in popularity.

    Representation

    • According to the United States Playing Card Company, each of the kings stood for a king in history. The king of hearts stood for Charlemagne, the king of diamonds represented Julius Caesar, the king of spades mimicked King David, and the king of clubs resembled Alexander the Great.

    The Joker

    • The Americans invented the Joker card in 1870, and it was termed the "Best Bower," card in Euchre.

    The Bicycle

    • During the late 19th century, bicycles were extremely popular, and when the United States Playing Card Company needed a name for their playing deck, a printing employee named Gus Berens suggested "Bicycle."
