What Is Clerical Work?

Clerical work is considered basic office help in any given department of any company. The clerical worker can be full-time or part-time. Clerical workers perform many different functions.

  1. Receptionist

    • Receptionist duties may include answering telephones, faxing documents, greeting clients and ordering supplies.

    Administrative

    • When offering administrative assistance, a clerical worker may type, copy or file documents for one or several departments or for an individual.

    Mailroom

    • In the mailroom, clerical workers help to sort mail, deliver mail to departments, prepare postage and weigh packages.

    Medical Offices

    • Duties for a clerical worker in a medical office would include answering the telephone, making appointments and filing charts.

    Warehouse

    • Warehouse clerical work could include filing documents and keeping track of other necessary paperwork.

    Temporary-to-Permanent Clerical Work

    • In some cases, a clerical worker is hired on a temporary basis, whether full-time or part-time, and then is hired as a permanent employee.
