About Online LPN Training Programs

An licensed practical nurse, or LPN, is a trained nurse who usually works under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). LPNs are in high demand in most states, with many states having a severe shortage of qualified nurses, so naturally it makes a good career choice for someone who wants job security. There are some options for online LPN training programs, but it is necessary to do your research before you enroll in one.

  1. Features

    • An online LPN training program should allow the student to study theory-based nursing courses over the Internet with occasional onsite meetings to perform labs. Clinical courses should be arranged at a nearby health care facility.

    Time Frame

    • Most LPN training programs, online or otherwise, will require at least nine to 18 months of full-time study. Part-time programs will usually require 24 months or longer.

    Function

    • During the course of an online LPN training program, expect to learn the basics of nursing care and to learn how to perform most nursing procedures, such as drawing blood, changing dressings on surgical wounds and taking patients' vital signs. Online programs may provide this training via video conferencing or interactive computer programs, but there should always be an in-person requirement for practice opportunities.

    Benefits

    • Although there is no escaping the in-person necessity for accruing the required clinical hours to complete your LPN training, programs that offer the theory courses online have a clear benefit for anyone who is currently employed or has small children at home. You will have a greatly reduced need to be physically present at set times in a classroom during the course of your training.

    Warning

    • Always make sure that any LPN training program is fully accredited and will lead to eligibility for licensure in the state in which you wish to practice. Attending an unaccredited program can prevent you from being hired.

    Identification

    • Your best bet for locating an online LPN training program is to obtain a list of accredited LPN training programs in your state (contact your state's board of nursing), then check with each of the schools in your area (or in an area you would consider relocating to) to find out whether there is an online option for the theory courses. Remember that the clinical courses will always require in-person attendance, so you will need to choose a school in a location you are willing to travel to on a regular basis.
