About Vet Tech Certification

Veterinary technicians, or vet techs, work in clinics and animal hospitals directly with the patients. A vet tech takes the medical history of the patients, prepares the animals and the equipment for surgery, assists the veterinarian in treatments and surgery, collects specimens and advises pet owners on how to care for a recovering animal.

    On the Job

    • Most states require students to pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination before issuing a license.

    License

    • In most areas, the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners issues the vet tech license.

    • Salaries for certified vet techs range between $20,000 and $28,000 per year.
