Goat Pneumonia Symptoms

Pneumonia, a relatively common condition in goats, is an inflammation or infection of the lungs. Pneumonia can strike year-round, and the condition can affect entire herds if it is not properly treated and controlled. Fortunately, most goats with pneumonia exhibit some symptoms of the disease, making proper treatment easier to achieve.

  1. Nasal Discharge

    • With the most common forms of pneumonia in goats, one of the more obvious symptoms is a yellow mucous around the nose. Clear or white nasal discharge is usually normal if no other symptoms are observed.

    Fever

    • Any temperature above the 101.5 to 103.5 degrees F normal range in goats is a sign of infection. A fever coupled with other symptoms is a good indication of pneumonia; however, not all goats with pneumonia will have a fever.

    Breathing Trouble

    • Similar to pneumonia in humans, goats with pneumonia may have difficulty breathing or have raspy breathing.

    Cough

    • A cough often accompanies pneumonia in goats. The cough is sometimes, but not always, phlegmy and productive.

    Loss of Appetite

    • A goat who is sick may suddenly stop eating or lose weight. Loss of appetite in conjunction with any of the other common pneumonia symptoms is a good indication your animal is sick.
