What Is Organza Ribbon?

Organza ribbon is lightweight with a stiff texture and a sheer, lustrous appearance. It is made from silk or synthetic fibers or a blend of both. The name "organza" comes from having properties similar to a fine, thin type of cotton called "organdy."

  1. Structure

    • Organza ribbon is made with a plain weave, meaning that the warp (vertical) threads and the weft (horizontal) threads are interlaced in a checkerboard pattern. This makes organza ribbon strong, ensures that it will not unravel easily and means the ribbon has no right or wrong side. The looser the weave of the fabric, the more translucent the organza ribbon will be.

    Manufacture

    • Organza ribbon is manufactured in China, India, the United States, Italy and France.

    Silk or Synthetic?

    • Organza ribbon made of silk is more luxurious and more expensive than synthetic organza ribbon. Blending silk with synthetic fibers like polyester, rayon and nylon makes it sturdier, smoother and less expensive than silk organza ribbon.

    Varieties

    • Organza ribbon is available in different widths by the yard or whole spool. It is sold in fabric, craft and gift stores in a variety of solid colors and patterns, and some is edged with metallic fabric or satin. It is sometimes wired to make it hold whatever shape it is bent into.

    Uses

    • Organza ribbon is useful for wrapping gifts and making decorative bows. It is often used as an embellishment for bridal wear and wedding paraphernalia, and used as a trim for evening wear and home furnishings.
