What Is a NIC Card Used for?

A Network Interface Controller, also known as NIC or Network Interface Card, is a device in computers that allows the computer to interface with a wired network. This can be a device built into your computer, or it can be an add-on device. Most modern computers have them built in.

What Does a Nic Look Like?

The connection looks like a phone connection, but larger, on the back of the computer (or side for laptops). A phone connection has two wires and a network cable has eight wires. Each wire must be intact, as this is what allows the connection to work.

Going Wireless

Many NICs are now combinations that include both wireless and wired protocols. If your computer will ever move from its wired connection, you want both wired and wireless.

Types of NICs

Where the computer sits decides the type of NIC needed. If the computer is stationary and a wired connection can be brought to it, you want a standard 100BASE-T NIC. If the computer is a laptop or cannot be wired easily, then wireless is a good option.

Problems with Wireless

One difficulty with wireless is that it runs at 2.4Ghz, the same frequency as some cordless phones. Some people find that they regularly lose connection to their wireless connection due to interference.

Network Cable

If the computer is wired, a category 5 cable should be used. This is a cable with eight twisted pair copper wires that support connection.
