- The bass drum, or kick drum, is the backbone of any drum set. Bass drums are played with one or more pedals with the feet, and range greatly in size.
- The snare drum is a vitally important part of the drum set, responsible for creating bite and tension in the sound. The snare is nearly never omitted in a basic drum kit.
- A hi-hat is two cymbals pressed together and apart by a foot-driven pedal. Because it also resonates when hit with drum sticks, many sounds are possible with the hi-hat.
- The toms are one or several parts of a drum kit used primarily for accenting the beat and providing fills for cover and excitement. While not as vital as the kick, snare and hi-hat, toms will come with any basic starter drum set.
- Cymbals are sold separately from all-in-one starter drum kits, because drummers prefer all types, brands and sizes of cymbals. The basic cymbals you will need to complete your drum set are the crash and ride cymbals.
- Most drummers, once they have become comfortable with the basic parts of the drum set, will add some extra percussion. Some popular items are cowbells, triangles and tambourines.
- A drummer needs a good throne to best utilize all the parts of the kit. Try different sizes and weights of drum sticks, and decide on the right hardware for your drums and cymbals based on your height and preference.
