About Natural Medicine for Depression

Depression is not just sadness but a very serious mental condition. Nearly 20 million adults are diagnosed with depression every year. Symptoms of depression include overwhelming sadness, suicidal thoughts, feelings of worthlessness, extreme fatigue, insomnia and/or too much sleep, loss of appetite or increase in appetite, headaches, backaches and joint aches. There is no cure for depression but there are ways to treat it with doctor supervision, therapy and natural medicine.

  1. St. John's Wart

    • St. John's Wart has been used for treatment of sadness, worry, nervousness, and poor sleep. St. John's Wart is said to be better than placebo but not as good as anti-depressants. St. John's Wart can be found at any health food or drug store. It may take four to six weeks for St. John's Wart to take effect.

    Omega 3 Fatty Acids

    • Omega 3 fatty acids are a type of good fat needed to help good brain function. Good brain function can help treat depression. Omega 3 fatty acids are in foods such as salmon, sardines and anchovies. It is also available in capsule form to prevent high mercury levels that can be found in these fish.

    Sam-e

    • Sam-e is short for S-adenosyl-L-methionine and is a chemical naturally found in our body and increases neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine. It has been found more effective than placebo and can be found in health food stores and drug stores.

    Folic Acid

    • Folic acid is a B Vitamin that is often deficient in people who suffer from depression. Folic acid can be found in green leafy vegetables, fruit, beans and grains. It can also be found in supplement form or as a part of a B vitamin in health food stores and drugs stores.

    Diet

    • Adding a healthy diet and exercise every day can help in the treatment of depression. Avoid too much sugar intake, alcohol, drugs and caffeine, and increase your intake of magnesium and Vitamin B.
