There are multiple ways to classify computer programs. For example, one could divide them by function---word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, tax preparation, anti-virus and so forth. Computer programs could be grouped by type of computer or mainframe versus personal computer. The most useful overall broad grouping is by type as listed below.

    Programming Languages

  1. In order to develop any other type of computer program, it must be written in one of the programming languages that translates commands into computer action.
  2. Application Programs

  3. When you are working on a computer to write, calculate, email, browse the web, prevent viruses from attacking machine, all these are examples of application software.
  4. Utility Programs

  5. Generally utility programs are written to solve one particular type of problem or perform a single action. Examples include patches to update software, convert or backup files or check computer function.
  6. Entertainment Software

  7. While some might consider game software another application, the myriad number and distinct purpose of these programs and the high use justifies a separate category.
  8. System Software

  9. None of the preceding types of software would work without the underlying system software or operating system, which controls the components of the computer.
