Facts on Cellos

The violoncello, or just cello, is a string instrument, the second largest instrument in the violin family. The instrument has been described as sounding the closest to the human voice. It's not as common in modern music, but the cello has a strong presence in European Classical music.

  1. History

    • The cello is essentially the modern evolution of the bass violin, which was invented by Jambe de Fer in 1556. By 1700, the cello phased out the bass violin in Italy.

    Construction

    • Good quality cellos are usually made from wood, such as spruce or poplar willow, and are hand carved. The front and back of cellos have a carved out design called a purfling, which actually helps prevent cracks in the cello's body.

    Sizes

    • The "standard" cello is called a "full-size" cello, but cellos are available in smaller sizes, from 7/8 to 1/16 the size of a full-size cello.

    Playing Technique

    • The cello is called "the lazy instrument" because it is played while seated.

    Musical Repetoire

    • Cellos are also played in string ensembles, chamber music and even solo recitals. Occasionally, the cello can be found in pop and jazz music.
