Nuclear Power Plants in the USA
Nuclear power plants in the USA are responsible for a considerable percentage of the power produced in the country. When they were first established in the 1950s, the possibilities of nuclear power plants to provide the necessary electricity were abundant. However, over time, concerns about safety became paramount. Although nuclear power plants continue to function in the USA, the push for their implementation has decreased since the 1970s.

History
-
The first nuclear power plant in the USA came online on December 20, 1951, in Arco, Idaho. This plant produced 100 kilowatts per hour but experienced a partial core meltdown in 1955, the first such event known to occur.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversees the operation of over 100 different nuclear power plants in the USA. It also oversees 16 plants that do not operate anymore. These plants account for nearly 20 percent of all power consumed in the country.

Features
-
The USA is home to a very vocal antinuclear energy population. Since the 1940s, a number of scientists and politicians have questioned the safety and potential of nuclear power. The biggest questions include threats from terrorism and how to dispose of spent nuclear rods.
Considerations
-
On March 28, 1979, the nuclear power plant located at Three Mile Island experienced a partial meltdown. While this was not a major incident that caused a loss of life, the situation culminated in a loss of radioactive coolant into the atmosphere. This event occurred 12 days after an antinuclear power film, "The China Syndrome," was released.
Significance
-
As of 2009, the final nuclear power plant in the USA came online February 7, 1996. A new push for nuclear power, however, was made at this time. With rising fossil fuel prices, concerns over global warming and electricity shortages, nuclear power is being looked at as a viable option.
