What Is a Software Engineer?

A software engineer designs, develops and tests software and configures and manages information systems in an organization or business. With the advent of the Internet and prevalence of advanced and web-based technologies, software engineers also develop Internet, intranet and web applications. In the broad information technology domain, a software engineer is among the most sought-after professionals.

  1. Function

    • A software engineer designs and develops software programs and solutions by studying information requirements and analyzing user-specific needs. Using different programming languages and other development, quality-assurance and testing tools, software engineers develop packaged systems, word processing and business applications, systems software, and other customized applications.

    Identification

    • Software engineers typically possess a bachelor or master of science in software engineering or computer science. Engineers with specializations in other streams but additional certification from computer-training institutes, good programming skills, and experience with computer systems, information architectures and web technologies also are considered by employers.

    Potential

    • Given the use of IT in multiple industries and the need to develop Internet and web programs, software engineering will continue to be a popular occupation. Software engineers work with high-tech companies, global businesses, web firms, government agencies, the military and multilateral institutions. Many experienced software engineers with business knowledge can also take up consulting assignments with small businesses, community colleges and small nonprofit organizations.

    Benefits

    • Salaries for software engineers depend on market dynamics, role specialization, qualifications and experience. However, software engineers generally begin with a median salary of $60,000 annually, with highly experienced and exceptionally skilled engineers drawing upward of $125,000 a year.

    Considerations

    • In today's highly competitive business environment, software engineers also need to possess strong communication skills, business and industry knowledge, and teamwork ethic to become leaders of information systems, project managers or IT consultants in the corporate world.
