The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is a membership organization for those 50 years of age and older. They offer many benefits to this age group, as well as advocate on their behalf politically. Membership is $16 per year, but the value of the benefits more than makes makes up for the fee.

    Discounts

  1. AARP members enjoy huge savings on travel, car rental, home security and more. There are discounts at food establishments, Disney theme parks, department stores and on health items. Discounts start at around 10 percent off the regular prices.
  2. Insurance

  3. A major benefit of AARP is the ability to get home, life, health, auto, and long-term care insurance at affordable rates from major carriers. For example, AARP's life insurance is through New York Life.
  4. Spouses Membership is Free

  5. Married members join at one rate--AARP includes spouses in the memberships for free so they can take advantage of the discounts and services as well.
  6. Advocacy

  7. AARP is a strong advocate for the rights of those 50 and over. They regularly ask their members to contact their political representative in regards to bills that would have an affect on this age group, such as required retirement.
  8. Community

  9. AARP is not just a membership organization, but an opportunity for members to meet online and in group travel programs (see Resources).
