Requirements for Becoming a Psychiatrist

The requirements of becoming a psychiatrist are similar to those for becoming a physician. There are at least 8 years of higher education followed by more years of postgraduate work to further strengthen skills and observe highly trained professionals at work.

College

A 4-year college degree is the first step toward becoming a psychologist.

Major

There is no specific major requirement, although concentrations in chemistry, biology or psychology are very helpful areas of study.

Medical School

The future psychiatrist needs to complete medical school and earn a Medical Doctorate (M.D.) degree.

Internship

Internships usually last at least a year and allow a opportunity to observe different cases.

Residency

A resident receives hands-on training with actual patients during residency. The United States requires 4 years of residency training. Canada requires their psychiatrists to have 5 years of training.

Choosing a Specialty

Most psychiatrists have a specialty, such as depression, addiction or bipolar disorder, to name a few.

License

Psychiatrists must pass an exam that includes an oral and written section in order to receive a license. After gaining a license, they may also apply to be board certified. This is also a written and oral exam.
