- The object of the game is to achieve a number of cards whose face value is as close as possible to 21 without going over. In casino Blackjack, you compare your total to the dealer's.
- Face cards are each equal to 10, while aces equal either 11 or 1, whichever the owner prefers. All other cards are equal to the numbers on their faces.
- Each player (including the dealer) receives one face-down card and one face-up card. He may ask for additional face-up cards (called "taking a hit") one at a time, as he wishes.
- If your cards total over 21, you "bust" and have lost the hand.
- In most casinos, the dealer must hit on 16 and stand pat on 17.
- You may split your hand in two if your first two cards are of identical value. You will then be given a new card for each existing card, and proceed as if you had two separate hands.
- Blackjack itself consists of a "perfect" 21, in which the first two cards in your hand are an ace and either a 10 or a face card. It is an unbeatable hand (unless the dealer also draws Blackjack) and winnings pay an additional 50 percent in most casinos.
