What Time of Year Is Best for Hummingbird Feeders?

Over 300 species of hummingbirds exist throughout the world, but only 16 species can be found in North America. Hummingbirds are migratory, going south to the tropics for the winter and returning north each summer to breed. The best time for feeders depends on where you live. Put your feeder up 1 to 2 weeks before you expect the hummers to arrive.

  1. Southwest

    • Hummingbirds may be found at feeders all year long due to the normally warmer temperatures.

    Southeast

    • Right along the migratory path of the ruby-throated hummingbird, this area may begin to see hummers as early as January or February.

    West

    • Western states can expect to begin seeing hummingbirds in April. The closer you are to the equator, the earlier in the month you can expect them to arrive.

    Northeast/Central

    • Hummingbirds can be sighted in April or May, again, depending on your proximity to the equator.

    Time Frame

    • Hummingbirds begin heading south anywhere from July to November. Leave feeders up for 2 weeks after you've seen the last hummer, in case of stragglers.
