White Oak

White oak is one of the traditional types of oak hardwood floors. It has a grayish charcoal tone, creating a natural look on hardwood floors. It is durable and versatile, able to be used in all areas of the home from living rooms to bathrooms. White oak costs approximately $3 per square foot.

Red Oak

Red oak hardwood floors have reddish tones, though some pieces can be lighter. This type of oak is coarser and more porous than white oak. It is easier to sand than white oak but less durable because it is unable to withstand harsh conditions. Red oak costs approximately $3 per square foot, comparable to white oak.

Engineered Red Oak

A variation on pure oak hardwood floors, these are engineered woods. Engineered red oak has a flat, smooth finish and is coated with eight layers of aluminum oxide, which helps the wood last longer. Engineered red oak can cost as much as $9 per square foot.

Engineered White Oak

This wood represents the new types of oak hardwood floors engineered for strength and durability. Engineered white oak contains a single veneer of real hardwood or a thick layer for added strength. It includes a poplar cross-ply core and lasts approximately 25 years. Engineered white oak costs less than engineered red oak at $4 per square foot.

Oak Laminate

Oak laminate flooring is the type of oak hardwood floor that gives homes the look of rich wood colors without the expense of pure oak. They look like real wood and are affordable and easier to install in the home. Laminate oak flooring is substantially cheaper than real and engineered oak, costing as little as $1.50 per square foot.
