They snake through the fabric of our homes, bearing cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter---or venting damp air from our dryers. Air ducts are invisible, traveling below or above us but they accumulate dirt and dust and other substances that fall out of the air that constantly passes through them. Smart homeowners keep them clean.

From Quick Guide: Air Duct Cleaning Basics

    Fire Hazards

Cotton lint, paper fibers and other debris pose a fire hazard when tangled as ducts turn corners and at junctures of two pieces of ductwork.
  2. Parts Failures

  3.
Motors, igniters and thermostats will wear faster than normal and may fail more frequently when clogged ductwork forces machinery to work harder.
  4. Respiratory Problems

  5.
Viruses and bacteria find warm, moist places to live in dirty ductwork, using these pathways to travel throughout homes for longer distances than if they had to survive in room temperature air with low relative humidity common during the heating season.
  6. Allergies

  7.
Dust mites and other allergens gather in congested pathways, using them to move throughout the habitation at any time of year: seasonal allergens like pollen are trapped and create a nuisance throughout the year.
  8. Efficiency

  9.
Clogged ductwork cuts down on efficiency, forcing the use of more energy.
  10. Creature Comforts

Ductwork that needs cleaning holds dampness during humid weather and absorbs heat during cold weather, making the living space below or above less comfortable.
  12. Just Plain Creatures

  13.
Birds, rodents and insects climb in exterior vent outlets and become entangled in debris, then die and add to the congestion.
