What Is Life Science?

Life science, also known as biology, is the science of "life or living matter in all its forms and phenomena," according to dictionary.com's entry for "biology." There are many different aspects to biology such as the origin of life, cells, reproduction, plants, animals and the human body and how it works.

  1. Origin of Life

    • Part of life science is exploring from where life actually originated. For example, scientists study and teach the theory of evolution. Others subscribe to the theory of creationism as explained in the Bible.

    Cells

    • Cells are the basic parts of life and a fundamental concept studied in life sciences. The cell consists of one or more nuclei, cytoplasm and various organelles.

    Reproduction

    • Reproduction is another aspect of life science. Reproduction is the means by which an organism produces another of itself. There are different types of reproduction such as asexual reproduction which requires only one organism. There is also sexual reproduction which is reproduction between two organisms.

    Plants

    • Plants are also included in the study of life science. There are many different processes that plants carry out on Earth that are important not only to the functioning of the plants themselves, but also to the other organisms that inhabit the planet. Photosynthesis, which is a process by which plants produce carbohydrates, is one of these functions.

    Animals

    • Animals are another important aspect of life science. They are classified into the "animal kingdom," or "Animalia." Animals all share certain fundamental characteristics, and they are also divided into different categories based on further similarities. For example, all mammals give birth to live young.

    Human Body

    • The study of the human body and its processes is a large part of life science. Life science focuses on the systems of the human body and how they all interact with one another.
