Requirements to Become a Dermatologist

A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of various disorders of the skin, hair and nails. They have to be prepared to treat minor conditions like acne, and trained to treat major conditions like malignant melanoma skin cancer. Before practicing, dermatologists spend at least 12 years training to meet the field's requirements.

  1. Undergraduate Studies

    • One of the first requirements to become a dermatologist is at least four years to earn a Bachelor of Science degree at an accredited university. You have to take biology courses such as human anatomy and physiology, chemistry courses and general education courses.

    MCAT Exam

    • The MCAT exam is a computer-based standardized test required by most medical schools in the United States and Canada. Scores are combined with an individual's grade point average and application to determine whether or not she will gain entry into the school.

    Medical School

    • Another one of the requirements to become a dermatologist is at least three years of medical school, learning about general health care and surgical procedures.

    Internship

    • Once prospective dermatologists complete medical school, they have to spend time as an intern at the hospital where they completed their medical training or at a physician's office. After they complete an internship, individuals can apply for dermatology programs.

    Dermatology Residencies

    • Individuals must complete a dermatology residency at a hospital, gaining experience in general dermatological practices. After completing the residency, he can practice dermatology in private practice, clinics or hospitals.

    Specialized Training

    • To become a dermatologist in a specialized field, such as cosmetic dermatology, you have to undergo further training.

    Board Certification and Further Training

    • Once an individual completes all of his educational requirements, he has to be certified by the American Academy of Dermatology and specific certifications required by each state. To keep updated in the latest procedures, one of the requirements of a dermatologist is to attend training courses and seminars on an annual or semi-annual basis.
