Tennis Racquet Facts

Aside from a court and a ball, a tennis racquet is the only piece of equipment needed to play the sport of tennis. Choosing the right racquet can have a dramatic effect on a player's game.

  1. History

    • The first tennis racquets had heads that were 65 inches square.

The first tennis racquets were made of laminated wood.

Modern racquets are made of graphite and have heads up to 137 inches square.

    Size

    • A junior's racquet is normally 21 to 26 inches in length. Adult racquets are usually between 27 and 27 1/2 inches in length.

A smaller head gives more precise control over a shot.

A larger head has a larger sweet spot and is better for beginners.

    Stringing

    • The material, pattern and tension of a racquet's strings all affect the performance of a racquet.

Most strings are nylon or polyester.

Pattern is a function of head design. Tighter patterns offer more power, while a more open pattern creates more potential for spin.

Lower string tension creates more power.

Higher string tension creates more control.

    Choosing a racquet

    • Beginners should choose larger head sizes with high string tension.

Advanced players should choose a racquet based on their style of play.

    Retail

    • An average low-quality tennis racquet will cost around $100.

An average high-quality tennis racquet can cost $500 or more.
