Facts About Cremation

Cremation is normally conducted at a funeral home, chapel or crematory. The body is cremated in a retort, also known as a cremation chamber. Most crematories allow families to view the placement of the deceased into the retort. Remains may not be scattered anywhere. It is necessary to check with local officials on guidelines regarding scattering of ashes.

  1. Length of Time

    • Cremation typically takes approximately three hours to complete.

    How Does it Work?

    • Cremation heats the body to temperature above 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the bone fragments have cooled, they go into a cremator, which crushes them into a fine powder.

    Average Weight

    • The average adult will weigh about six pounds after cremation. On average, for every pound the person weighed when alive, will produce about one cubic inch of ash after cremation.

    Services Offered

    • It is possible to have regular funeral services when choosing cremation. Often the funeral home will perform the cremation after viewing and the services are over.

    Prices

    • Cremation typically costs about $1,000 or more, depending on family requests for viewing, an urn or memorial services.
