Symptoms of Pneumonia in Babies

Pneumonia is a lung infection that may be caused by either a bacterial or viral infection. Generally, bacterial pnemonia is more serious that viral pneumonia. A common cause of pneumonia in infants is RSV (respiratory syncytial visus) or GBS (group B streptococus). Pneumonia is more common during the winter and spring months.

  1. Fever

    • Babies with pneumonia will develop a high fever rapidly. This fever will mostly likely be over 100 degrees F.

    Cough

    • Babies with pneumonia will develop a persistent cough.

    Breathing Difficulties

    • Babies with pneumonia may breathe rapidly and seem to have trouble breathing deeply.

    Vomiting and Diarrhea

    • Babies may vomit or experience diarrhea while afflicted with pneumonia.

    Refussal to Eat

    • The baby may not have little or no appetite at all.

    Weakness

    • Babies with pneumonia will appear weak and very ill.

    Treatment

    • Pneumonia is often treated with antibiotics. Also, babies with pneumonia will need plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, and they will also need rest.
