Parts of a Subwoofer

There is nothing like the sound of booming base as you drive down the road or during a heavy action scene in a movie. This base is created by the subwoofer, but what is subwoofer?

  1. Basket

    • The large frame containing all the parts of the speaker is called the basket. The basket is often made out of metal and can be either cast, which is more rigid and stamped, which may cause movement and distort the sound.

    Diaphragm

    • The diaphragm is the outer covering of the speaker and is what you see vibrating when a speaker is on. The diaphragm is often made out of a paper or plastic.

    The Guts of the Subwoofer

    • The booming base is created by the actions of the voice coil, which are made up of a permanent and electromagnet. Alternating current ran through the electromagnet will alter its charge and either repel or attract the permanent magnet. This push and pull is what moves the diaphragm and makes the base sound.

    Suspension

    • The diaphragm is held in place by a suspension. The suspension allows enough give for the diaphragm to move, creating the sound.

How a Woofer is Different From a Tweeter

    • Woofers are designed to create the lower frequency sound waves, while a tweeter is made for the higher range. Each is carefully calibrated so as to not create interference with the other.
