About the Climate in France

The weather in France can vary greatly depending on the region of the country. As may be expected, the north it tends to be cooler than the south. The physical size of France along with the mountains and an extensive coastline help to give it this diverse climate.

  1. The Coast

    • A maritime climate is experienced in the western part of France near the coastline, according to writers at Discover France. Here the temperatures range from 45 degrees F in January to 61 degrees F in June.

    Interior of France

    • In the central part of the country, there is a somewhat wider temperature range than what is seen in the north. In Paris the average temperature in July is 64 degrees F and is 36 degrees F in January, as listed by Discover France.

    Mountainous Regions

    • The mountainous regions of France include the Pyrenees in the south and Massif Central mountains and the Alps in the east. Winters are snowy and bitterly cold with the Alpine city of Briancon, for instance, getting an average temperature of 28 degrees F in January and 63 degrees F in July.

    Southwest France

    • In the region where Aquitaine and Poitou-Charente are located, there is a great deal less rainfall than in the northern part of the country. Thunderstorms are also common, according to writers at France This Way.

    Southern France

    • Along the Mediterranean coast milder temperatures prevail. As mentioned by Discover France, January temperatures are around 45 degrees F in January and 73 degrees F in July.
