Signs of Transmission Failure

Although the signs of transmission trouble are not subtle, many people ignore them until real problems start. By allowing the small signs to come and go without mechanical attention, you have invited transmission failure. Here are the signs to look for.

  1. No Acceleration

    • Failed transmissions will not accelerate, and this is often the sign that people notice. However, by this time the transmission is beyond a quick maintenance and may need an overhaul.

    Lights On

    • Watch out for either the check engine light or the transmission light, depending on the type of car you drive. A failing transmission will trigger the sensors that control these lights.

    No Shifting

    • A failing transmission will not shift into one or all gears. In many cases, the only thing you can do in a car with a failed transmission is watch it idle.

    There's Leakage

    • Failed transmissions do more than leave a few drops of fluid. The red syrupy transmission fluid will practically pour out of a failed tranny, often accompanied by smoke.

    A Clunker

    • Many failing transmissions will emit a "clunk" sound when shifting into certain gears. The "clunk" is often accompanied by a shaking or rattling you can feel.

    Smells

    • Transmission failure is also heralded by a burning smell, especially after the transmission fluid has drained from the transmission.
