What Type of Flowers Bloom in the Fall?

Fall is a time for deep festive colors, apple cider and the thrill of playing in fallen leaves. Although fall is not generally associated with gardening, there are a number of brilliant and beautiful flowers that bloom during the fall months. Use these plants to supplement flower beds when the summer blooms have faded and fallen. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mums

    • One of the most common fall-blooming flowers is the mum. Hardy mums should be planted in the spring to allow them to establish roots prior to the fall season. However, mums planted in the fall will bloom but may not survive the winter.

    Stonecrop

    • Stonecrop, also known as Sedum, is usually found in the perennial section of the greenhouse. This disease-resistant plant will flower almost all year long. Colors range from pink to white or yellow.

    Joe Pye Weed

    • Joe Pye Weed is often overlooked because it is a native plant that grows wild along roadways across the United States. However, this tall wild flower is a great backdrop that requires very little maintenance.

    Pansies

    • Pansies, despite their name, are one of the hardiest annuals available. They come in deep shades of purple, gold and rustic reds as well as more subtle shades of white and blue.

    Aster

    • Asters are similar to mums except they are often taller and come in a larger variety of colors. Asters can be placed behind or along side mums for a variation of the common fall flower bed.
