Symptoms of Pneumonia in Chinchillas

Chinchillas are known for their soft, dense fur. According to Critters USA 2007 Annual Report, the fur is so dense that fleas can't get inside. Chinchillas can only take dust baths to keep that remarkable fur clean. If the chinchilla's fur gets wet, this makes the chinchillas susceptible to fleas and pneumonia.

Runny Eyes and Nose

According to Susan Brown, DVM, one of the first symptoms of pneumonia is clear or colored discharge from the eyes and nose of the chinchilla.

Loss of Appetite

Loss of appetite is another early symptom of pneumonia, but is also a symptom of many other illnesses. Chinchillas cannot survive more than a couple of days without food. Contact your vet immediately.

Fur Problems

The fur may be wet, sticky, stick up in clumps like a paintbrush or feel rough to the touch.

Lack of Normal Activity

Because they are not feeling well, chinchillas will not be as active. They may either huddle in a corner or sleep all of the time.

Causes

There are many causes of pneumonia in chinchillas, including getting their fur wet and then being placed in a damp room before they dry, living in damp conditions, bordatella or e.coli infection.
